According to a member of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), 60% of new cases are caused by the recently discovered Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16, which has now taken over as the predominant variant circulating in the nation.

The official member stated that sublineages of the XBB variety account for 25–30% of COVID cases. He added that in the meeting held on Friday, it was seen that all new COVID cases were breakthrough infections. He noted that most cases were of different sublineages of the XBB variant and were transmitted regardless of the status of the COVID-19 vaccination.

He noted that the only plus is that the intensity of the symptoms has not increased, and only individuals with comorbidities were the ones who passed away and were hospitalized.
